Research involving humans is premised on a fundamental moral commitment to advancing human welfare, knowledge, and understanding, and to examining cultural dynamics. When you are studying something harmful, have to frame it that the more you know, the more you can use against it, you try and neutralize it. Lots of marketing research about how you can create desire in people. Grocery store layout not random decades of empirical research. Must be able to frame research as being beneficial to humanity, moral pursuit of research. For us, must be enhancement of human welfare. Movement against allowing research, 20-35 years ago, you could use a research project about anyone, but now it"s subject to lots of conditions, worse things that will happen in future, try and prevent those, by any means necessary. Two major atrocities in the 20th century led to codification of research ethics. German doctors heavily involved in research on concentration camp inmates.
