October 7th- chapter 7- physical and cognitive development in early childhood (2-6 year) Physical development in early childhood: skeletal growth, new epiphyses emerge, lose baby teeth- girls lose theirs first, nutrition and non-brushing can start tooth decay. 2nd hand smoke can suppress child"s immune system and not be able to fight bacteria: brain development, rapid growth of the prefrontal cortex, hemispheres continue to lateralize. Handedness: reflects dominant cerebral hemisphere, right handed (90%)- left hemisphere, left handed (10%)- right hemisphere. Jointly influenced by nature vs. nurture: position in uterus, practise. Left hemisphere especially active: due to increase use of language: language skills and handedness. Infectious diseases: malnutrition- poor diet represses immune system. Diarrhea a danger in developing countries (no absorbent of nutrients) can be helped by oral rehydration therapy and zinc supplements: immunization- miss conception about vaccine safety, without adequate immunization outbreaks happen that threaten development & life.
