Document Summary
Largest pure endocrine gland that we have super cal in the anterior neck has a butter y shape. Two lateral lobes (one on left and right side: connected via bridge called isthmus. Thyroxine (t4) inactive version converted to t3 when we need it. Involved in growth and development: parafollicular cells secrete calcitonin (competes with parathyroid hormone secretions to maintain blood calcium levels) Inhibits osteoclast (break down bone) activity to uptake calcium to bone. Hyperthyroidism seen more then hypo: often presents as, graves disease, symptoms. Increased metabolism: goiter, rapid, irregular heart rate, weight loss, protrusion of eye balls (exopthalamos, mood swings some e ects do to t4 in blood stream nd some because of calcitonin. Thyroidectomy - take thyroid out and supplement you with hormones. Ingestion of radioactive iodine thyroids use iodine to create hormones so if we prove the radioactive one the thyroid picks it up and assumes it normally but once it binds it destroys part of the thyroid.
