Primarily keratinocytes + outer stratum corneum ( horny tissue) 20-30 cell deep protective layer (chemical, physical, biological trauma) Produces 90% of vitamin d3 - bone metabolism + homeostasis of calcium greatly influenced by process. Blood vessels from dermis provide nutrients for epidermis. Hair follicles, oil glands, eccrine (water/seat) glands & apocrine (sweat glands) Reticular layer - 80% of dermis - connective tissues , collagen elastin reticular. Basement membrane : holds epidermis + dermis together. Fat cells : function to store calories, protect from injury regulate heat loss etc. Prevent fluid loss (excessive loss of water/ electrolytes) Information - sensations of touch, temp , pain , vibration , pressure. Eyes brows ( 3-4 months) head follicle (6-8 years) Age related changes :toenails thickset (hard to cut), Extrinsic aging : smoking, uv light , environment. Uv rays + smoking = reduction in skin ability for protection / repair. Skins ability to act as a barrier against loss of body fluids = stable.
