Useful? an excuse to term males having hysteria, separated it from female hysteria. Have something that is causing the problem - shell shock, takes cowardliness away from it. Stigma of hysteria, didn"t want to be associated with female hysteria, called it shell shock. Western male wasn"t allowed to be emotional in this time, meant to be strong, brave. Didn"t want to be considered like the females who were emotional. Females were considered hysteria if they were rebellious but a man would be considered hysteric. So didn"t want to go away from the gender norm. Putting males and females on a more levelled playing eld which was very diff in this time. Some men experiencing shell shock could have been killed and frowned upon. Still kind of similar to what our society is. Bridging a pag bw males and females in similar hysteria. Trying to push them further away in another sense as well.
