September 28, 2016 Depression Mental Illness Facts Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend, or colleague Mental illness affects people of all ages, education and income levels, and cultures 20 of Canadians will personally experience mental illness at some point Stigma or discrimination attached to mental illness presents a serious barrier, not only to the diagnosis and treatment but also to acceptance in the community Almost of those who feel they have suffered from depression or anxiety have never gone to see a doctor about this problem Depression affects about 121 million people Women experience depression more than men Fewer than 25 of those affected have access to effective treatment Depression People who have depression feel a lot of sadness, isolation, guilt, anxiety Never want to get out of bed and could just be in an emotional state of exhaustion that cant be fixed by sleep. They dont enjoy their good days. Depression is the leading cause of disability as measured by years lived with disability (YLD) and th 4 leading contributor to the global burden of disease (GBD the sum of years of potential life lost due to premature mortality and the years of productive life lost due to disability) Mood specific shortterm feeling states or emotion tomes that can be either positive or negative Anxiety unpleasant feeling state or physiological reaction that occurs when fear is provoked Arousal is the key component. Depression state that eventuates from a perception of an important loss or the treat of such a loss we are losing something or the treat that we will lose something. Can express itself physiologically, cognitive, behavioural aspects. Characterised by avoidance, withdrawal, diminished activity There is no biological test currently available but it does come from a mental health specialist o To have depression, a person must have at least 12 core symptom and 5 or more9 other symptoms present in the same 2week period within the last month Core: Depressed mood most of the day, everyday markedly diminished interested in pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day Other: feeling guilty, hopelessness and worthless recurring suicidal thoughts having trouble sleeping, either too much or too little experiencing appetite weight change trouble concentrating feeling little energy or unexplained tiredness agitation or slowing down of body movement Beck Depression Inventory
