Information is processed in a discrete fashion (one after the other, no overlap: what limits our ability to attend to multiple tasks at a time, each stage takes a measurable amount of time, we have a filter, and this filter affects, the filter is thought to exist at the stimulus identification stage, early theory of attention= when the filter exists at the stimulus identification, evidence to support this theory(cid:224) welford. The cocktail party phenomenon (cid:224)talking to a friend at the party, you can only really attend to the conversation you are having with your friend, you have no sense of the other conversations/noise/music/etc. going on in the room: someone across the room says your name(cid:224) suggests that other information is becoming processed unconsciously (cid:224) some information can bypass the early filter that exists, broadbent, 1958, proposes that there is a filter that occurs at a later stage, late theory of attention.
