Chapter 18 – Exercise Adherence th September 26 Adherence – Sticking together or faithfully conforming to a standard of behaviour in order to meet some goal Benefits of exercise:  Mortality/Longevity  Physical/Physiological  Cognitive  Psychology  Financial  Other Mortality/Longevity:  All-cause mortality rates have been found to be lowest in the most fit individuals  Regular exercise can slow, and in some cases reverse, functional losses associated with aging (eg increase strength and functional capacity, reduce probability of falling)  Only 18% of women and 33% of men over the age of 65 are being categorized as being active Physical/Physiological Benefits of Exercise:  Weight control  Decreases resting heart rate  Improves Max VO2  Prevents high blood pressure  Reduces coronary heart disease risk  Decrease % body fat  Maintains bone density Cognitive Benefits of Exercise:  Chronic exercise has been shown to improve cognitive functioning (eg memory, academic achievement) in high school students and adults Psychological Benefits of Exercise:  Decreased stress  Decreased anxiety  Decreased depression  Improved mood  Improved self-esteem  Improved perception of quality of life Financial Benefits Associated with Exercise:  Increased productivity  Less time lost from job  Reduction in health care costs Other Benefits of Exercise:  Enjoyment  Socializing  Despite the numerous benefits associated with exercise, many people still do not exercise regularly Statistics:  64% of Americans were seen as overweight or obese in 2004  Only 10% of sedentary people will ever begin an exercise program  50% of all people who start an exercise program will drop out within the first 6 months  Among adults, 30% do not participate in any physical activity and only 10-15% participate in regular vigorous exercise (3x/week for at least 20 mins)  Physical activity declines by .5% from age 12 to 21 for both boys and girls (70-35%)  50% of youths from 12 to 21 don’t participate in regular physical activity Reasons for Not Exercising:  Lack of time  Lack of energy  Lack of motivation  Lack of skill  Lack of resources  Lack of support  Injury, discomfort Determinants of Exercise Adherence:  Personal factors 
