Chapter 11 - Psychological Skills Training (PST) October 17th Definition: the systematic and consistent practice of mental or psychological skills  Psychological skills can be learned but must be practiced and integrated into your training routine  Psychological factors account for most day-to-day fluctuations in performance Myths:  Psychological skills are “innate” (they can’t be learned)  Only for “problem athletes”  Only effective for “elite” athletes  Provide “quick fix” solutions  Not useful - “hocus pocus” Components of PST programs  Psychological components are similar to physical skills in terms of learning them 1. Education phase o Learn the nature and basis of the skill and understand how it influences performance 2. Acquisition phase o Structured training program to develop skills and techniques 3. Practice phase o Integrate skill development into practice and competitive settings *helps make the sporting experience fund and helps meet everyone’s need PST program  Who? o sport psychology consultant – very expensive and only for elite teams or individuals o coach – needs to teach psychological lessons  When? o Pre – season or off – season (do it right after the team forms) o It will take 3-6 months before they can start using these techniques in real life situations o Ongoing process integrated into practice (i.e. do deep breathing exercises then shoot your foul shot, or watch game tapes of your best performance)  Needs assessment o Evaluate strengths and weaknesses o Oral interview & psychological inventories o Performance profilin
