Kinesiology 2241A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Kyphosis, P90X, List Of Flexors Of The Human Body
Document Summary
Recall the spine from lecture 2 the skeleton. Note that the spine has a natural 3 curves. These curves help dissipate load coming up from below. Otherwise the shock load goes straight up to the skull. Too much lordosis or kyphosis will put excessive stress on the intervertebral discs between the vertebrae and can lead to pain and degeneration. Too much angulation between the vertebrae to maintain excessive lordosis or kyphosis tends to squeeze the intervertebral disc our from between the vertebrae, resulting in a bulge and possible rupture. On the anterior side, the abdominal muscles act to pull the rib cage toward the pelvis and thereby compressing the spine. The pelvis is the base of the spinal column, but it is mobile on the two hip joints in the sagittal plane. Normal alignment is shown in (a) anterior tilt (b) and posterior tilt (c) tend to put stress on the stabilizing muscles which weaken over time.
