Lecture 13  Feb 04 Transition to organized sport - Snowshoe sport ushered competitive sport into an era of organized sport o The elite of the elite were in the snowshoe club - Masculine, white middle class English speaking athlete is the face of the amateur - Snowshoeing was the most popular winter sport - Lacrosse was the most popular summer sport - Montreal lacrosse club was made in 1856 o Montreal is surrounded by native reserves o George beers spent his entire life promoting the game of lacrosse o He tried to make parliament to declare lacrosse as canada’s national game - Montreal bicycle club – 1878 o First bike in NA was in Montreal in 1874 o They were being mass produced in Britain and being shipped over o This club followed the model of the snowshoe club o They would ride long distances on this shitty bikes o Single file 20-50 men o They were stop every now and then to have some men perform tricks on the bike o They would race for competition - The point is that these 3 clubs came together in the late 1800s and set the foundation of Canada’s multisport clubs and formed the Montreal amateur athletic association in 1881 o Snowshoe, biking, lacrosse o This is the leading organization in Canada o Because they are a
