How is this related to the issue of doping. Testing ones mettle in competitive athletics form of self discovery. The basis for success in competitive athletics is to find opponents who provide a competitive context in which one can test ones skills and abilities. What makes for great sporting events is a competitive contest. One sided sporting events do not share the same intensity as well matched competitors. The emphasis on winning undermines the role and equality of a competitive atmosphere. The opponent is the touchstone on which you are testing your abilities. Relates to doping because the touchstone is a competition of natural ability where you are testing yourself, not testing which drugs give you the best athletic performance against opponents. Not a true test of ones mettle.
