Kinesiology 3336A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Lumbar Vertebrae, Intervertebral Disc, Cervical Vertebrae
Document Summary
Primary curve born with: kyphosis: c curve, convex posteriorly, thoracic and sacral regions. Secondary curve come on with time: lordosis, convex anteriorly, cervical and lumbar regions. The primary curves are more or less maintained by the shape o of the structures supporting them. Secondary curves are influenced and dependent on the balance of muscles: create them, to maintain their position and shape. Curve functions dynamically: extension: increase lordosis / decrease kyphosis, flexion: decrease lordosis / increase kyphosis. Failure to dynamically change may bring about pain or dysfunction. Good news: provide strength and resilience to column, compressive forces are shared between convex curves and supporting soft tissue, absorb, distribute, and dissipate loads through axis. Bad news: consequence = shear forces at transition zones potential breakdown sites. Intervertebral discs: broader anteriorly in cervical and lumbar regions: orientation of articular processes/facets, rotation from t-spine, flexion/extension from lumbar, attachment/alignment of ligaments and muscles.
