Document Summary
Aggression: intentional behaviour aimed at causing either physical or psychological pain. The important thing is the intention to hurt someone. Hostile aggression: an act of aggression stemming from feelings of anger and aimed at inflicting pain or injury. Instrumental aggression: aggression as a means to some goal other than causing pain (defensive lineback) Sigmund freud theorized that human beings are born with an instinct towards life, which he called eros, and an equally powerful death instinct, thanatos, which leads to aggressive actions. Eros: the instinct toward life, posited by freud. Thanatos: an instinctual drive toward death, leading to aggressive actions. Males are theorized to aggress for two reasons: males behave aggressively to establish dominance over other males. Among young males, violence is typically initiated by issues related to respect . Power is now based on attributes related to success such as high-status careers, wealth and celebrity.
