Document Summary

Initial studies indicated that hip protectors significantly reduced the incidence of hip fractures and their use was widely adopted in institutional settings. In the last decade this has been challenged. Hip protectors probably slightly reduce incidence of hip fractures in older adults but only in an institutional setting. Current evidence (low quality) suggests that hip protectors may slightly increase the risk of pelvic fractures. Out in the community hip protectors probably have little/no effect on hip fractures. Counter-intuitive results how can a meta-analysis fail to confirm effectiveness of hip protectors. Acceptance and adherence of wearing the protectors by participants in the study have been poor; difficult to measure efficacy if the hip protectors are not being worn. Variety of hip protectors were used in studies and heterogeneity was not of main importance couldn"t perform subgroup analysis to determine the specific features of protectors that would produce different effects. Bias was complex and difficult to disentangle.
