Document Summary

The orientation of the face relative to the hand was wrong on the topographic representation, we know this based on people with phantom limb pain. Phantom limb pain arises from amputated pain by reporting pain in the phantom limb. The pain may be linked to the reorganization of the brain in the primary motor cortex and the primary somatosensory cortex. If you take a q-tip and brush it across the forehead of someone with the phantom limb, report sensation only on the forehead. However if you brush it across their chin, they will feel a sensation on their phantom limb, they will feel it brushed across the area once associated with the amputated limb instead of the chin. This occurs because the hand representation is now gone, the region of the lower face is now growing and expanding into the area once associated with controlling the hand.
