Conjunctive moderator variables in vulnerability and resiliency research: life stress, Social support, coping skills, and adolescent sport injuries (a study) A moderator variable is a quantitative variable that affects the nature, the direction, or the strength of a relation between an independent or predictor variable and a dependent variable. There were many male and female high school athletes. The researchers were looking for a correlation between their stress levels and their injuries. A sports injury was defined as a medical problem resulting from athletic participation that restricted subsequent participation for at least 1 day beyond the day of its occurrence. Research assistants were trained to record the injury. Exposure was controlled for (they had to make sure that they took into account how much playing time/athletic time each athlete had and put this exposure into the equation) Compare social support/coping skills vs life events vs time loss due to injury.
