Did you know?
o ACRM did a research on physical activity and Sedentary behavior subsequent to serious
orthopedic Injury Ekegren, Beck
o Low physical activity after the surgery- 1% of recommended physical activity
o Sedentary behavior during the recovery 76-99% of the day
o More research is needed on the impact of immobility on orthopedic Injury outcomes and risk of
chronic disease
o Intervention might be needed to change that behavior in this population
o Scared to be physical activity- psychological intervention should help patients with that
o These data don’t fit our rehabilitation model, Recovery period is left up to the individual
o Orthopedics outcomes and chronic diseases can be decreased if our healthcare model changes
Injury Prediction (Stress)
o William and Anderson model (1998)
o Athletes are stressed because they care, they wanna win
o When an individual feels that the demand of a situation exceeds their resource capability- they
have a STRESS RESPONSE
o Physiological demands- when someone is stressed they will experience certain body sensations-
for example, Accelerated Heart rate, irregular breathing, perspiring unnecessarily, stiff muscles
o Attentional demands- focus- they focus a lot on the certain thing and gets hard for them to
distract themselves (they zoom in and in and cant zoom out)
o Stress is hard to measure- They measure stress outside the competition and see it potentially has
a role to predict injury
o Moderators- can influence the strength or direction of the relation. For eg, Coping Resources,
Personality, History of Stressors
