Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture 22: (movie)- March 20
Document Summary
Proprioception: sense of how our bodies are positioned. Was only 19, condition came out of nowhere; so rare, condition did not have a name. When first diagnosed, condition was more sever, needed a wheelchair but never got in one because he was determined to walk again. Could move his limbs, but without proprioception, couldn"t tell his limbs what to do. Ian has no sense of touch, unable to sense how his limbs are moving loss of proprioception. Muscles and joints still worked, nerves that told the brain what to do with the body were destroyed. To be able to control his limbs again, he would need to create a new force between mind and muscle. Plans movements in his mind, structures a movement before he performs it no movement ever again would be considered automatic . No proprioception = eyes have to tell his brain what his limbs were doing; if the lights go out, he will collapse.
