Conussion Research
- Research is being done to restrict the venous flow to stop the brain from moving around
so much and experience severe forces that will damage the axons

- Impact Battery Test: it is a neuropsychological test (cognitive motor & sensory ability
test - measure of behaviour) to compare the athlete’s performance after a concussion
relative to before the concussion to see if the athlete has recovered enough to return to
the sport
The neuropsychological profile has to return back to profile before the
athlete can resume playing
This is not the most accurate evaluation
Motor Unit Types
1) Fast twitch, fatigable (FF) (Fast Motor Unit)
They are characterized by the highest conduction velocity (100m/s)
They have a large fibre diameter
They innervate fast twitch muscle fibres
The reason why these have a high velocity is due to the large diameter of the
fibre
This means that the fibre is heavily myelinated and are able to conduct the
impulses extremely fast
2) Fast twitch, fatigue resistant (FR)
Characterized by medium conduction velocity (60m/s)
They have a medium fibre diameter and are able to innervate both fast and/or
slow twitch muscle fibres
3) Slow twitch, fatigue resistant (SR) (Slow Motor Unit)
Characterized by a slow conduction velocity (40m/s)
The fibre has a small diameter and is only able to innervate slow twitch muscle
fibres
ERP Measures of Cognitive Processing (Neurophysiological research)
1) Event-related Potentials (ERPs) They are averaged electrical brain responses to the
time-locked stimuli
