Information Processing: 3-stage approach
{Input} Stimulus Identification Response selection Response programming {Output}
Similar to how a computer processes information
Stages of information processing are serial and discrete
Stimulus Identification Stage
Stimulus Detection- Sensory information attained from external sources is detected and
transformed into neurological signals
o Neurological signals are mapped onto a meaningful event
o Raw material to Bioelectrical signal
o Eg. This aseall is approahig y fae at high rate of speed
Pattern Recognition Can be a natural or trained phenomenon
o Extracting patterns or features from environmental stimuli for use in latter stages of info
processing
o Training pattern recognition can optimize performance in temporarily demanding sports
o So during game they can recognize the pattern after training so you can make quick
decision on what to do
o You become aware of the stimulus
Chase and Simon Study
Looked at pattern recognition in 3 groups
Chess maters, amateur chess players and beginners
3 groups sat in front of screen and showed slides very quickly
They showed a chess board with chess pieces for 100 milliseconds
In real game situation, the chess pieces depicted where they could be in a game scenario
Second game, the random one- they were just random
Asked them to tell the positions of the chess pieces
Recall accuracy was measured
Results-
Real game- chess maters had better performance throughout 3 trails and got to 100% accuracy
ad egiers did’t.
o Random game situation- Chess masters had terrible performance. Accuracy for
amateurs and beginners had better recall accuracy
Specificity of pattern recognition- you only get good at pattern recognition for your own
domain. (aka in this situation, real game situation.)
X-ray of an Ankle
Diagnosing is pattern recognition
Physicians and attending should be trained in pattern recognition
