Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Paul Fitts, Cognitive Ergonomics, Motor Learning

Topic 2 (Midterm 1)
Psychomotor Behaviour
Extrafusal muscle fibres- limb movement
Intrafusal muscle fibres- stretch→ activation → limb position information
- Motor learning- A set of internal processes associated with practise or experience leading to a
relatively permanent(key feature) gain in performance capability
- If you are forgetting everything you learn you are not motor learning, important for people who
have had head injury, stroke (they forget how to walk etc)
- Motor control- An area of study dealing with understanding of the neural, physical, and
behavioural aspects of movement
- You observe then you relate it back to structure and function back in CNS (motor control)
History in development of Motor control and learning-
Psychology- Richard Schiffrin- how humans formulate memories and factual memories(explicit)
- Developed a 3 step model- human memory is a way how computer stores information
- Serial nature of information processing- when you do one thing, you have to complete one thing
to move on
- Factual memories are mediated by high level cortical structures
- Implicit memory- memory for a motor skill but mediated via cerebellum (you store those
memories here
Engineering- Arthur melton- Had him make a task to find the best fighter pilot.
- Showed that simple tasks do not predict somebody's performance on a complex task.
- Paul Fitts- involved in developing cockpits of fighter planes. Lots of accidents occured when
pilot approached landing. It was an issue associated with spatial compatibility
- Spatial compatibility- The switches were not spatial compatible. First person to appreciate how
humans process information. Warning a light was lined with warning light b switch which was
not spatially compatible.
- Ergonomics- the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.
- Cognitive ergonomics- is concerned with mental processes, such as perception, memory,
reasoning, and motor response, as they affect interactions among humans and other elements of a
system. ... It is a subset of the larger field of human factors and ergonomics.
Neuroscience- Reciprocal Innervation- C.S. sherrington
- First person to understand the idea of reciprocal innervation.
- When you walk two different muscle types are associated. Agonist- quads and Antagonist- Hams
- To activate agonist, you need to inhibit antagonist
- Explains walking and reaching
- First common path at the spine produce muscle contraction
