Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Stroke, Tral, Postcentral Gyrus
Document Summary
Group of varied origin nuclei connected to the thalamus and cerebral cortex. Play an important role in excitation of m1 neurons. Affecting ability to excite the neurons in our primary motor cortex. Essential to have intact b. g. structures to move. When deficit here, you can literally be frozen, unable to move. Having this inability arises as a result of parkinson"s disease. Parkinson"s is most well known disease that affects the b. g. B. g. lesions affects the substanta nigra (in picture on right in red) B. g. serves as a selection system decision making for movement. People with parkinson have problem with their direct pathway. Bradykinesia slowness of movement, associated with parkinson"s, not enough stimulation to m1. Video of person with parkinson"s in acture stage, he is 4 months post diagnosis, gait while off medication, very rigid, had electrodes put into his sub-thalamic nucleus, this stimulated it and he was able to walk fairly normal. Impairs cognition because it prohibits them from moving.
