Document Summary

Anxiety is associated with, but is not the same as arousal. Arousal is a neutral physiological phenomenon that is related it both negative (anxiety) and positive (exhilaration) feelings: it can be positive (helping) or negative (detract on our performance) . Relationship between arousal and athletic performance is represented by the missing a free throw inverted u theory. Hypothesizes that an optimal level of arousal is necessary for performance. If arousal is too low, we suffer too low of performance: too low = boredom, poor performance. If arousal is far too high, you have a lot of anxiety: soccer game you are super nervous in shoot out, you over kick it. We want to be aroused enough so we are pumped up and enthused, but not where it bores us out or stresses us out too much. Key performance key performance is in the middle. Flow is another concept used to describe performance.
