Document Summary

Providing the energy to move in younger and older adults. One system cannot act in isolation of the other systems: The rate of atp utilization increases when you start to exercise. Need to get more o2 in and co2 out. Oxidative metabolism is important because oxygen is the nal electron acceptor. You metabolize aerobically because it is more ef cient. Anaerobic produces lactic acid and atp stored substrate (glycogen) to produce energy. You lower atp, increase adp, and increase fatigue. Metabolism ensures atp concentration stays relatively the same during exercise. Females are at a disadvantage with exercise because of size of lungs and body. Brain has competition with the other systems for oxygen, especially when exercising. O2 uptake during transition to moderate intensity exercise: It takes longer for older adults to increase oxygen uptake and reach a steady state than younger adults. Primary uptake for older adults is anaerobic which is not sustainable because its not using oxygen.
