Kinesiology 3474 - Psychology of Interventions (Midterm)
Lecture 1
Chapter 1 Introduction to Psychological Interventions
- When coaches and athletes talk about the mental side of the sport, they often make
oets like, e eed to hae our heads i the gae ad he tighteed up uder
pressure
- In an indirect way, these clichés are acknowledging that psychological preparation is an
important part of success (mental side = huge influence on what we do & and probably
comes out much more in sports differee etee ho is ad ho does’t)
- Having the right mind set can be helpful in recreational sports, exercise, performing arts,
and even our everyday work and personal lives (if you think you can do something, you
proal ill; if ou do’t thik ou a do soethig, ou eer ill)
- Usig the jargo of sport ad eerise psholog, he e talk aout the etal
side of performance, we are referring to psychological skills (skill aspect)
- Psychological skills are defined as psychological qualities or attributes that need to be
acquired and/or developed to help an individual achieve desired personal or
performance outcomes; just like physical skills, some people seem to have more
inherent psychological skills that others; luckily, these skills can be learned, and
dedicated practice can yield measurable benefits for performance and personal
achievement (skill is something you can acquire, something you can get better at;
practice = gaining expertise)
Psychological skills training (PST) refers to the systematic practice of mental skills to achieve
specific outcomes BEYOND what would be attainable through physical and technical training
alone
PST is used to enhance performance, increase enjoyment, or achieve greater
self-satisfaction from sport or physical activity participation
A PST program typically includes a combination of interventions, such as goal
setting, mental imagery and self-talk, all of which we will discuss later in this
course
In addition to enhancing performance, psychological skills can also be key factors
in helping individuals to maintain motivation and regulate negative effect
The basic aim of any PST program is to provide individuals with the self-
regulation skills necessary to function without constant input from someone else
(ex. Coach, therapist) coach builds the foundation, but eventually you have to
do it on your own
