3 years old= 85% of adult brain volume. Cognitive flexibility: being able to cognitively adapt to situations/environments. Working memory development begins at 7-9 months remember unseen objects (ie. toys hidden under a cloth) Inhibitory control development begins at 6 months doesn"t touch something instructed not to be touched. Cognitive exibility development begins at 9-12 months seek alternative methods. There is small window of time to develop and skill/function or the brain will reorganize (use it or lose it) can produce different pathways. Sensitive period: period of time where it is ideal to develop a skill/function (ie. language) Around 8-10 (sensitive period), the ability to learn a new language greatly declines. Synaptic pruning: extra (un-used) neurons and synaptic connections are eliminated to increase ef ciency of neuronal transmissions extra networks are taken away to strengthen other networks (happens around 2-4 years old)
