To look at different contexts and learner characteristics that may affect l2 acquisition. To look at how learner language has been studied in the near past. Originally thought to be mainly effects of l1 on l2. However, it has been found between the two languages of a bilingual, in heritage languages, and even effects of the l2 on the l1 when the person has been living in the l2 environment for a long time. Russian l1 speakers often omit articles when speaking. In japanese [l] and [r] are allophones (variants) of one phoneme (distinctive sound). Japanese speakers often mistake these sounds when speaking english. We speak of positive transfer when it leads to appropriate forms and meanings in the target language. We speak of negative transfer when it leads to divergent forms and meanings. The grammar (knowledge) and use of the l2 at a particular stage of development.
