Linguistics 1028A/B Lecture 15: LNG 1028 W8 Pt 2
Document Summary
4 tones that distinguish meaning: the same word can have a different tone, which creates a different meaning, ex. [ma: high tone = mother, falling-rising tone = horse, high-falling tone = scold, mid-rising tone = hemp, tone is mastering pitch, when mastered, you create meaning change. If a language has complex contour tones, it will also have non-complex tones: pitch & tone tend to affect the nucleus (the vowel) [pat: p = onset ae = peak t = coda, sonority rises towards the nucleus then falls after. If a language permits consonant sequences in the onset position, it will also permit single consonants in onset position and syllables without coda. If a language permits consonant sequences in the coda position, it will also permit single consonants in coda position and without onset: morphological classifications. If vcc then vc: all languages have words & morphemes but they differ in the ay they combine them, 4 types of systems can be distinguished.
