Document Summary

Systems of linear equations (text reference: section 2. 2) c(cid:13)v. olds 2010. You know what the standard form of an equation of a line in 2 looks like. The variables are usually called x and y, but they could be called x1 and x2, or m and n, or anything. Of course, we can have other kinds of equations with 2 variables, and you"ve probably seen some of those before. For instance, x2 + y2 = 1 is the equation of the circle with radius 1. More complicated curves in 2-space have equations like x2 + xy + y2 = 4 or 5x4y 3x2y2 + 2xy5 = 0 or. And then there are equations like x + y y2 = 6, and 2x+y = 4 and x + sin y = 1. You also know that in 3, an equation like x + y + z = 1 is not a line. It"s just a whole bunch of lines side-by-side.
