Microbiology and Immunology 2500A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Cryptococcus Neoformans, Aspergillus Fumigatus, Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis
Document Summary
Mycology: more closely related to us than bacteria. Plant-like forms but lack defined root or leaf structures and are non-photosynthetic. They are assigned to their own kingdom, mycota. Saprophytic or parasitic of higher organisms: saprophytes growing on dead or decaying tissue. Unusual metabolic products can be toxic to higher animals. Meat of mushroom is very closely packed assembly of small tubes hyphae. Fairy rings when a mushroom exsporulates in an explosive fashion when there is no wind. Grow in a manner similar to bacteria but x10 larger. Grow flat on culture media (secile growth). Sit there like bacteria colonies adherent to the medium. Not much of a hazard to laboratory workers. Used for commercial production of alcohol and citric acid. Grow in a complex mass (mycelium) composed of tubes (hyphae) When hyphal filaments are packed densely, the mycelium can appear to be cohesive tissue, as in the case of mushrooms (homobasidiomycetes) Reproduce by the formation of spores (sporulate vigorously)
