Specialized cartilage and bone ct distinguished by the preponderance of solid intercellular material. Perichondrium covers the entire cartilage for both hyaline and elastic cartilage types; not fibrocartilage. Exception: some articular cartilage which is made of hyaline don"t have a perichondrium. Type ii: form majority of the cartilage fibrils. Type vi: found in matrix mainly at periphery of chondrocyte, where it helps to attach it to matrix. Type ix: facilitate fibril interaction with matrix pgs. Type x: organizes collagen fibrils into 3d hexagonal lattice. Cs and ks joined to core protein --> pg monomer. 80-100 pg monomers bind ha --> large hyaluronate pg aggregate. Aggregates bound to thin collagen fibrils by electrostatic interactions and glycoproteins. High capacity to attract and bind water (solvation) Helps anchor chondrocytes to matrix and influence interactions between chondrocytes and matrix. Specialized ct in which ecm has a firm consistency but lacks strength. Tissue able to bear mechanical stress without permanent distortion.
