Medical Sciences 4930F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Mesenchymal Stem Cell, Adult Stem Cell, Cell Therapy
Document Summary
You should be aware of the following terms: plasticity, totipotent, pluripotent, and multipotent. This is because there is a need to continually generate cells for tissue maintenance and repair in the boy. In general, stem cells can come from post-natal organs, which are referred to as adult stem cells. They can also be obtained from embryonic tissues and are called embryonic stem cells. In 1961, james till and ernest mcculloch were studying the effect of radiation on the bone marrow of mice at the ontario cancer institute in toronto discovered stem cells in 1961. Adult stem cells can be found is most of our children"s tissues and adult tissues. The role of these cells is to maintain our tissues during our lifespan. These stem cells have different abilities between our tissues and they show diminish function with age, chronic disease, and injuries. Look at the diagram below to see the location of these stem cells in the body.
