Like modernity, technology disrupts: new tech causes chaos and a need for reinvention, modernity creates uncertainties, uncertainty comes with this disruption. This meant that you were becoming inauthentic, shallow and superficial. The film foregrounds the telephone, which is the first place where the mic found its use (cid:494)tele(cid:495) = at a distance: sound and intimacy allowed at a distance. Telephone (1876), mic comes into pop music in 1925: allows for another kind of intimacy, before, singing had to be belting to be heard, new singers were produced for the mic = crooners. They were seen as more sexualized and romantic.
