Metadata - information that describes other information resources/objects for a variety of purposes. Meant to provide a structured, useful on a larger information sources. Can be embedded in recourse for a human to navigate through it. Describing the document for purposes of easy navigation. Ex: music notes, book with table of contents, index. Book belong in a certain part of the library along books of the same. Read and unread, sort by subject, date sent, recipient, sender (email programs) Friends or not friends, following or unfollowing, verified or not (social media) Always going on in documents and electronic information and a lot of that depends on metadata that is applied to that document so that the human or computer knows how to handle it on the basis of that metadata. Metadata labels different structural parts of the information to make sure computer processes properly. Webpages; everything you see is determined by metadata in the coding.
