A formal system for drawing conclusions regarding a text or many texts. Entails measurements, the assignment of numbers, thus has to be done formally. Involves a set of rules that outline what to measure and how to measure it. Follow an organized procedure of steps that is precise and exact. Objective, systematic, and quantitative description of the manifest content of communications says berelson. Manifest means existing explicitly in the text, involves no inferring or reading into meaning, not using subjectivity to surface meanings. Somebody that knows the rules and procedures used to assign numbers can redo the experiment and conclude with the same results (repetition) Example: the proportion of space devoted to advertising in newspaper (2) test hypotheses. One could have a theory that claims a certain statement that is testable. Example: more space to atrocities by american enemies than to atrocities by its friends (3) infer sender.
