Visions & re: visions of mit 1200: defining media studies, what"s in 1200 for you, why these specific media, why sf, where we"ve been and are going. Journalism: objective observer (5 ws); not a lot of people reading hard news ; how each media tells a story (above and below the fold); non-judgmental, stand back. Public relations: objectivity gone, tell a certain story about a certain person in a certain place; trying to sell a point of view; corporations, gov"t etc all use pr; everyone has become their own. Media literacy: culture studies all came together with mass comm to create media literacy; where 1200 fits in; ways in which we mediate and are mediated by our culture. Know how to read different texts, how images and texts work together, how sound works, etc. Will be touched by the world before you walk out into the world.
