36. 9 million ppl living with hiv/aids globally as of 2014: majority are located in sub-saharan africa. 22 million do not have access to medications. Up until 2014, 34 million people died of aids: including 1. 2 million in 2014 alone. One way in which we"re measuring progress is through the use of targets and initiatives: how many people we can get on meds in a certain time, how we can implement educational campaigns around condom use. Ngos continue to pressure unaids and who to set ambitious targets. Achmat refused to take arvs until they were available to the general public. Medication strike used by achmat and the organization, taken up by the media, to draw attention to the lack of access to arvs. Began with a case in which they sued the south african government for not preventing mother-to-child transmission. Harm reduction strategies that were normalized within communities: ex. Abc program in uganda: reducing stigma but also describing the crisis.
