Diversity (and) Management Diversity within Organizations  Organizations – white male worker types with white male professional types “ruling” them  Management has brought dramatic change – globalization (who/where our customers are)  40 years ago most companies traded with customers/suppliers from the same country/ethnicity  American “founder” effect Gender and race equality in the workplace has taken our attention away from other kinds of discrimination/inequality. There was something where companies had to hire people who were different.  Modern division o Generic perspective “We have to keep up with the times and times are more diverse and businesses need to follow that” o Social justice perspective Affirmative action “Organizations, businesses they’re important institutions in society and if society has been exclusive and non-just in some ways, it is our organizations who can help us to balance that and implement justice” All about being fair and inclusive. Dealing with diversity has been systematically shafted by organizations and societies for a long time. o Strategic perspective A bigger fish. It’s important to be just and stuff, but managing diversity well is really smart from a business perspective. Integrating diversity will help us communicate with businesses in other cultures, it’ll help us get new ideas, help us be more adaptive and therefore competitive. Make businesses more profitable and stretch further internationally. o Mainstream and Multistream Diversity is a pig Women taking maternity leave, etc. Politically correct speaking – racism, sexism Pulling cards – the gender, race or sexual orientation card when getting hired Diversity in Organizations  Types of Diversity o Age – how you handle workers, mandatory retirement, etc o Health – having to use the company benefits to pay for medication o Religious  Tasks of the manager  The ‘opportunities’ of diversity o Human resources – need to be able to focus on a large group of people, not just the locals and small pool hires are crap o Matching with customers – if employees at Chinese restaurants only spoke Mandarin, they’d have very few customers o Better ideas/more imagination  The ‘problem’ of diversity in organizations o Linguistic o Women needing mat leave Diversity as Social Justice  Legal dimensions  Ontario Human Rights Code o “Every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to employment with discrimination because of” race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, record of offenses, etc. Diversity and Strategy  Kinds of demographic diversity  Relevance to o Internal organization o External organiza
