Truman president desk symbol? Nature and Importance of Leadership - Leadership definitions o “the ability to inspire confidence and support among the people who are needed to achieve organizational goals” o Alternative definitions:  Influence, shared goals/direction/vision  Montana and Giuliani: taking blame, doing the right thing o Considering definitions critically:  What is arguable?  What are commonalities and unique features across multiple definitions?  INFLUENCE - the mediated effect that our behaviour can have on others  Giuliani – taking blame, right thing – moral aspect? - Roadway Express, Inc. example o Shared leadership approach o Linked to growth and profitability o How do we know these things are related?  Post hoc fallacy?  Lack of evidence grounded in this claim… - Leadership as partnership o Power between parties in the relationship is balanced o Elements:  Exchange of purpose; individual and organizational  Leader and followers influence each other  Example of non-leadership: parent and child (no negotiation)  Expression of voice  Personal accountability  Telling the truth - Leadership as relational o Maintenance and quality of interpersonal relationships as a major driver of success o Aside (implication): this can be difficult, in times of conflict.
