Management and Organizational Studies 3343A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Mindset, Attribution Bias, Reinforcement
Document Summary
Challenges: fear of failure, a fixed mindset (fixed or growth mindset) Fixed mindset: born with it/genetics, think failure is always a negative. Growth mindset: actively seek challenges, believe they can always get: overreliance on past performance. Puts no focus on the potential to learn better if they practice, don"t see failure as an adequacy. Don"t attribute success to luck, attribute it to working hard. When something goes wrong they base it on luck: the attribution bias. Methods for finding the silver lining: destigmatize failure, embrace and teach a growth mindset, consider potential (hiring & promoting, data driven approach to identify cause. Overcome the attribution bias by assessing what causes failure/success. Antidotes to bias: build breaks into the schedule, take time just to think, encourage reflection after doing. May be cheaper and easier in the short term to ignore failures but it may limit the organization"s ability to learn.
