March 31, 2014 Accident Investigation Lecture Emergency planning How to get people in an orderly fashion Disability management Making sure you don’t lose track who are on disability leave • Accidents are unplanned situations Why Investigate? • Required by law • Determine cost o Note: cost of accidents are used in the cost/benefit analyses in individual  OH&S plans for an industry o Direct and indirect costs • Assess safety practices/standards used by the organization o Determine causal factors which led to the accident o If factors are isolated and understood, then can incorporate this  information into an OH&S plan for the company o NOTE: Factors will be both direct and indirect (Ie. Factors involved in the  accident and those which led up to the accident) • Process compensation claims o Investigation is part of record compilation o For benefits, safety programs, legal requirement fulfillment, etc Who investigates? • OH&S expert • Individuals who understand assessing cause because individual knows the work  process and tasks involved • May include a joint committee of labour and manage
