March 31, 2014 Chapter 14: Workplace Wellness Lecture • If one organization is doing well, usually the organizations are doing well too  economically  • Historically workplace wellness concepts were reactive • Dealt with issues of health after conditions arose • Recently emphasis has been placed on improving the health and resiliency of  employees in the workplace in a proactive manner o Less sick days and more productive organizations if workers are more  healthy • The National Quality Institute promotes “Healthy Workplaces” o Good publicity for the organization, there is monetary aware • The Canada Awards for Excellence o Recognize: holistic workplace health systems o Causal Friday was one of the initiatives EAPs • Many workplace health programs developed from Employee Assistance Plans  (EAPs) • EAPs were developed to improve the life for workers • Employees go in to ask for advice and suggestion, it is not mandatory • Emphasis of EAPs in on the individual worker  Versus •  An organization’s OH&S program with focuses on the entire company Q: Are the programs helpful?
