Document Summary
Some think management is a pure craft and is learned through experience. Management is learned through scientific methods that are linked to other scientific disciplines. Essence of evidence-based management: management decisions occur at the intersection of 4 different factors (evidence, judgement & experience, effects on stakeholder, local evidence) Evidence= knowledge = what we know through science (body of systematic knowledge) (e) Judgement and experience (important but prone to error/ bias) Local evidence: local context, managers collect their own data from immediate environment (e) Effect on stakeholders (ie employees, those who are immediately and indirectly affected by decisions consequences of decisions) Proportion of factors varies with the nature of the decision. Ego defense: people think highly of themselves and reject anything that tries to downplay that. Textbooks many years ago were very different information has been updated. We give advice and seek advice based on having a multitude of experience (even though it varies per person)
