Management and Organizational Studies 2181A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Expectancy Theory, Job Performance, Equity Theory
Document Summary
Invest themselves in their job, bring energy to their work. Why does one person picks one behaviour over another. Expectancy: belief that one"s effort will result in obtaining a desired performance goal. Low self-efficacy: if you don"t believe that you"ll have good performance, then performance will be lowered. Self-efficacy: person"s belief about their ability to perform successfully, past accomplishments. Ex: took self defense class in past so comfortable walking at night: vicarious. Other people can do it, so i can too: verbal persuasion, emotional cues. Other people support you increase: what you believe you can do, internal. Fear, anxiety can decrease, pride and enthusiasm can. If we think that putting in effort will get outcomes, then we"ll be motivated. Don"t see the link of performance to outcomes. Maslow"s hierarchy: move on from one level to the next. Maslow"s list of needs is insightful but no evidence for a hierarchy . In maslow"s world: there are no starving artists.
