Lecture 18 Intro to Molecular Biology Genes  Viruses can have DNA or RNA to encode for genes o Every other cell in the world NEEDS DNA  Virus only grow in living cells o They do not have mechanics to produce proteins and machinery by themselves, they need to use living cells  Rough E.R.  Golgi apparatus  Cytosol and tRNA are needed by viruses  DNA Replication and Transcription: o Occurs in the 3' to 5' direction on template strands o Strand is synthesized 5' to 3' Classification of RNA Virus Genomes Single-Stranded RNA Viruses  Positive Sense RNA viruses o Able to be transcribed into proteins  Negative Sense RNA Viruses o Needs to be transcribed to +sense RNA to be able to be transcribed into proteins  Ambisense RNA Viruses o They resemble -sense RNA but can translate genes from the +Sense RNA strand Double Stranded RNA Viruses  Some viruses can contain double stranded RNA o Unusual considering RNA is mainly single stranded Pathways of Information Flow of RNA Viruses  Human cells don’t carry machinery to synthesize R
