A movement protesting police killing of black americans. Began in 2013 with the use of the hashtag #blacklivesmatter on social media. Argues that the police killings are frequently unjustified and caused by systemic racist bias in police. Mobile phone video of shootings often used to support these claims. Protests include peaceful demonstrations, non-violent civil disobedience and riots. There have been retaliatory shootings of police (not approved by blm) Blm has ignited widespread debate about racism in and beyond the criminal justice system. Stereotyping: the stereotyping--the social classification of particular groups and people by highly simplified and generalized signs, which implicitly or explicitly represent a set of values, judgements and assumptions concerning their behaviour, characteristics or history. From the time of slavery, african americans have been depicted in a series of demeaning, dehumanizing stereotypes. Stereotypes of violent black men legitimate (provide an excuse for) violence against black men. Media represent the world: signs stand in for the real thing.
