Document Summary

He took innis(cid:495) ideas and moved them into the era of tv: innis had no exposure to tv and the impact it would have on society. Mcluhan has a three part division of history according to dominant modes of history. Ear culture/speech: hearing is multi-directional, fluid, constant, you can(cid:495)t really block out your hearing, unlike what you can do with vision. People really relied on each other: communal. Not individualistic, sense of being part of the community. Circularity, cyclical matters most: time is told by the seasons, coming and going in a circle, rather than linear. Balance of senses: unified in both information and the senses, what people know is what they communicate about, the other senses are also seen as prominent. Time-bias: primary focus is on the maintenance of that society in time, not about extension of messages in space, how do you preserve that society and figure out how it can move ahead in the future.
