Ear culture/speech -> emphasises on hearing, multi-directional, constant, difficult to block out
sounds, where was this prominent? Closed society

Circularity, Cyclical concept of time, seasons
Balance of senses, taste touch smell, arguing that hearing is important but not so much more
Time-bias -> opposite of the extension of the messages in space, other types of media is more
about maintaining society and time

Eye over Ear -> visual space replaces acoustic space, visual space of text and how you process
information that information to your eyes become the most important feature replacing the
conversation space
o Eye experiences the world with detachment
Shared to separate experiences -> From those who read and who does not.
Solitary: writing and reading alone -> individualism
Introspective/abstract thinking comes out of print culture
Time from circular to Linear
Standardization -> writing systems

o Radio/and especially TV -> involve a retribalization of people.
o Secondary orality - retrves some of the primary orality
o reunites sensory experiences -> e’re all athig it together at real tie simultaneously,
might not being the same room but still at the same time

impact national sovereignty and identity
Federal Cultural Policy
High Culture -> (ballet, symphony music -> thought to serve positive benefits, promote
democracy, foster critical thinking citizen) contrast as a mass culture -> defense against US mass

Public broadcasting model for TV
o CBC-controlled -> promoting high culture

o Private affiliates would be a part of that network
