It is what happens when we ignore everything we deem to be valueless as we go about developing the world. While whatever is absent, or in a state of perpetual disrepair, is not thought to be worth it, or, in some cases, not thought about at all. If this is true, then it"s fair to say that we see the world in relief, because all the good stuff we mistakenly classify as being somehow worthless falls back forever into obscurity and forgetfulness. This produces a world we experience as both strange and familiar (in other words, as uncanny, and exaggerated), as only certain things, certain values, come to define lived experience, while the rest just disappears.
